What’s happening in 2014

It would be remiss of me not to add a short piece on the work we’re doing in 2014. 2013 was a year of consolidation, after Matt Brown went of and took a full time contract with a US start up in July 2012. That contract was completed in later February 2013, so this is a 12-month review.

We’ve undertaken projects in Performance marketing for the following brands: B&Q, uSwitch & Lifebook, the first two were successful, the third a clear demonstration of what doesn’t work in Affiliate marketing: a long conversion, a high ticket price, and poor product understanding meant that after 3 months, we decided to terminate the program. Never pleasant, but put simply, you can’t polish a turd.

In March 2013, Matt started a consultancy brief with a new agency start up called UPP, headed up by former employer Peter Thomson, and David Coates. Matt was brought in to develop their digital media offering, and the company has gone through transition successfully and now has a stable of solid clients, and the reputation and kudos of the business is growing. This is definitely a long-term project, and exposure to the wider world of advertising has been a joyous ride. One can get caught up in their own little world from time to time, so it’s great to get some perspective.

In May 2013, Matt Brown took on a contract with China Search International, authorised re-seller for Baidu. He picked up the lead from old friend and adversary Fionn Hyndman, who is a former colleague and the man who brought Matt into the Affiliate fold at DGM back in the day – 2003 to be precise. Fionn went on to set up and manage DGM Australia, and Singapore, before moving on to set up APGM, which owns CSI. The Baidu proposition is phenomenal and for the first time, Matt is selling something incredible, unique, and desired. This is a long-term project too and Matt hopes to get more and more involved in this. He’s currently running Sales & Marketing for UK & EMEA.

On a personal note, my wife Kate and I are expecting a child – imminently – due date was yesterday, so any day / hour now, we will be heading off to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill (birth place of my grandfather Harry, and cousins Miles & Peter) for the birth. Very, very exciting and life changing times.
